A different approach to concept and technique here: The pencil is only tentatively outlining, depth and colour are added in watercolour. The whole drawing (very small in fact: 10x8,5cm) concentrates on expression and inner intensity, more an improvisation. Which probably suits the theme: Hendrix was a true master in that disciplin.

Jimi Hendrix. Drawing, 11x9cm. |
I made this drawing in the early 90ties, and for some time the it was laying in the studio of my master teacher and covered unintendedly with wax stains from a sculpturing process. I discovered that a few days later and was quite annoyed, but the experienced master took me aside and said: "Calm down - I saw it. You know, contingency just adds another dimension to art, something that can't be made or planned or foreseen and therefore it's good. Look at it with care and you will see that the drawing in fact is gaining from the stains."
He was absolutely right. Before I eagerly was trying to erase anything incidental or accidental from my artwork, but ever since I tried to see it as a native and enriching part of the process. In the very moment you decide to keep an incidental element you make it a part of conscious creation anyway.
By the way: If you never had been to Electric Ladyland (and some of my current students weren't, I suspect) - it's high time! As a start (also featured on the Album): "All along the watchtower", a Bob Dylan-cover, filmed life in Atlanta (1970), where you can see where I took inspiration from.
We have heard about prices before: Jimi Hendrix in fact was awarded a Grammy. Posthumous in 1992, 22 years after his dead. Prices can haunt you. As disregard can.
