Neil Young - The American

It's better to burn out, than to fade away.

I really enjoyed his latest album Americana - shredding a bundle of traditional American songs in best Canadian woodcutter style. Folk songs, murder ballads, protest and campfire songs side by side: deliciously unpolished, occasionally sounding like an excited but prematurely aged high school band (bless Crazy Horse and Young's fancy guitar solos). An acoustic history lesson, blaring and jangling, with a touch of Boom Chicka Boom...

There something mysterious about Neil Young's voice then. Like it's been preserved in some prehistoric rock formation (sic!) - probably he's gargling with formaldehyde? Anyway, the man is aging, his voice and music are not. Nor does his delight in playing.
